Love, Justice, & Generosity

Listening to your heart, we need to invest in weak links, and we’re more than halfway to our fundraising goal.

A thought on Love:

“Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there.”

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The world is noisy. We’re constantly bombarded by notifications from our phones; emails that need responses, work that has to get done, groceries that must be purchased, and posts that should be liked. We are all running in our own personal hamster wheels that we’ve constructed. What would it look like to stop running? To pause and instead of listening to everything happening externally, listen to our hearts. You might be surprised by what you hear.

    A thought on Justice:

“I think American society really is soccer. We're so interdependent and we need so many perfect passes to score a goal that our challenges are weak link; not strong link. What matters is how good our eleventh player is; not our first.”

Malcolm Gladwell - Revisionist History Podcast (Ep.My Little Hundred Million)

What Malcolm Gladwell is talking about here is reframing the way we think about how we invest in our society. If you think of society as a chain, we’re not as strong as the strongest link- we are only as strong as the weakest link. Instead of continuing to invest high concentrations of our resources into the best schools, into the nicest neighborhoods, and our already thriving communities, we should begin investing our resources into the weakest links of our society. Our poorest schools, our toughest neighborhoods, the places with the greatest need. Justice looks like investing in the areas that need it most. If we don’t, the chain that is our society breaks and the people who are the most marginalized suffer the consequences. If you have time, listen to the podcast on Spotify or Apple Podcasts this week (both links below). Respond to this email with your thoughts.

    A thought on Generosity:

My family and I are at $3,425 of our goal of $6,000 for our annual “It Takes a Village” Scholarship fundraiser. We believe that every student regardless of their background should be able to pursue higher education. This is why we’ll be giving away four awards in the amount of $1,500 in 2023. My family and I invite you to become a part of this village sending students to higher education. We have three days left of the fundraiser and every dollar counts. You can donate on Venmo to @ittakesavillagescholarship. We thank you for your generosity.

      A question for the day:

      • What is your heart telling you today?
