Love, Justice, & Generosity

Children of the same Creator, two steps forward-one step back, and y’all got my spaghetti?

On Love:

“For we are all tarred with the same brush, and are children of one and the same creator, and as such the divine powers within us are infinite. To slight a single human being is to slight those divine powers, and thus to harm not only that being but with him the whole world.”

Mahatma Gandhi

On Justice:

Justice is a never-ending journey of two steps forward, one step back. It takes time. It’s slow. The tipping points that garner media attention fail to recognize the momentum that had been building for years. For example, 2020 was a tipping point for the Black Lives Matter movement. The movement began in July, 2013 after the killing of Trayvon Martin. For years the movement was highly controversial. Many other black men were killed in the years after Trayvon. It wasn’t until George Floyd’s death in 2020 that the movement became widely popular and accepted. It took years of intense and focused organizing by people committed to justice.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

Margaret Mead

On Generosity:

“Y’all got my spaghetti?” Brandy was walking towards us with a grin on her face. She had a backpack on and well-worn shoes. “Yes, Brandy. We got your spaghetti!” I yelled back as I walked with the other outreach students who were helping deliver meals that evening at a park near Gonzaga’s campus. When she reached us she opened her arms and leaned in for a hug. Over the previous months we had grown to know Brandy and her story quite well. Through a series of unfortunate events she had ended up on the streets of Spokane. She’s spent a number of years chronically homeless. There were many others like Brandy I met serving with Meals in the Margins, a student-led homeless outreach group. Serving meals and care packages were the bridge to building friendships. Nick Yochum, a close friend of mine, is starting Meals in the Margins at Whitworth University. His group has their first outreach night planned for April 17th, this upcoming Monday. They’re looking to raise enough funds to sustain their efforts throughout the next few months. If you are willing, it is my pleasure to invite you to support the cause and donate on Venmo @nickyochum.

A question for the day:

  • Who is someone you are grateful for in your life? If you’re up for it, let them know.

Resource of the Week:

An app called Libby. You open the app, connect your library card, then you have access to free books and audiobooks! You just have to check out the books, or wait for them if there’s a queue. If you don’t have a library card, you can quickly sign up for one online and stop paying for that audible subscription.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in taking this journey towards more Love, more Justice, and more Generosity in their own life and in the world, please send them this link which will allow them to sign up (or copy and send: https://ljg.beehiiv.com/subscribe).

Thank you for being here.

With Love, Justice, and Generosity,
