Love, Justice, & Generosity
A self-sacrificing type of love, wise words from Pope Francis, and actions first - feelings follow.
On Love:
I’ve been reflecting lately on the power and challenge of unconditional love. To love without having any expectations of receiving anything in return. It’s countercultural to how our society views love. Yet, I often have reservations about whether or not it is possible to perform acts of love, whether big or small, removed from any desire or hope it will be reciprocated. A love that is self-sacrificial, a love that endures, a love that is patient, and kind and is given regardless of the circumstance. That is a love I strive to practice and obtain. True agapē love. One that takes deep humility and selflessness. And while I often fail to practice this type of love, it is worth failing for.
On Justice:
“We must regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it.”
On Generosity:
Actions first, feelings follow. I remember hearing this phrase for the first time at Mt. Adams Leadership camp in high school. John Norlin, someone who has had a profound impact on my life over the years, referred back to the phrase multiple times during his keynote at camp. I don’t always “feel” like being generous. It is in switching the paradigm and choosing to act even when we “don’t feel like it” that we develop greater humility and capacity for loving others. Generosity is sacrificial. When you make it a goal to practice generosity, don’t listen to your feelings. Act first, the feelings will follow.
