Love, Justice, & Generosity
Love in the little things, homelessness has gotten worse because of me, and not limiting our generosity.
A thought on Love:
It’s found in the little things. In the text sent to a sibling to let them know that you’re thinking about them. In washing the dishes or taking out the trash without being asked. In choosing to prioritize someone and protecting time on your calendar for them. In going out of your way to make that phone call or leave that voice message. Loving relationships are built like legos. One little brick at a time.
A thought on Justice:
“In a real sense all life is interconnected. All men are caught in the inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny: whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”
The city I live in is in a crisis. There aren’t enough homes for people. I’m working on a longer piece of writing called, “More people are becoming homeless because of me.” I’m exploring this idea about how moving to the Ballard neighborhood in Seattle has in a small way increased the demand and decreased the supply of housing. As many others like me move to the area for various reasons, it causes rents to skyrocket. Luckily, I have a job that allows me to afford the high costs of living here. Not all people have that luxury. Rent increases are followed by evictions for people who can no longer afford housing and evictions are the number one root cause for increases in homelessness. If I play a part of the problem, it necessitates that I play a part in the solution as well. More to come as I dive deeper into this concept.
A thought on Generosity:
How do we make generosity a way of life and not just a one-time event? I think it has to do with not limiting ourselves to how we give. Generally, when people think about generosity it’s in the sense of giving financial resources. While giving financially is an important way to give, I think there’s much more to explore in how we give our time and our talents to others. Whether it be giving our time to volunteer or using our creative gifts to serve others. We all have something to give.
A question for the day:
What is one talent you have that you can give to others this upcoming week?
Resource of the Week:
Everything Everywhere All At Once (Won the Oscar for Best Picture 2023)
This movie is inspiring, hilarious, and beautifully made. A powerful story of a family wrestling with love.
