Love, Justice, and Generosity
Happy LJG Day! The first of many. I’m happy you’re here.
A thought on Love:
What is love? “Oh baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more.” No, but really, what is love? There are many definitions of what we call “love,” here are a few according to Greek philosophy. Philia - the affectionate type of love you feel towards friends. Storge - the type of love you feel for your family. Eros - the love you feel towards a romantic partner. And Agapē - an unconditional, selfless, and sacrificial type of love you actively practice towards others. This type of love isn’t just a feeling, it’s a verb. Agapē demands action. It’s the type of love that meets people’s needs. Agapē is what I’ll be referring to when I talk about love in this newsletter. This type of love, I believe, has the power to change the world. In the coming weeks we’ll explore how.
A thought on Justice:
Cornel West, a philosopher and activist, says that “Justice is what love looks like in public.” When I think of the meaning of love on a public scale, I think about people having their basic needs met. Food, water, shelter, safety. The very basic requirements for a healthy life. What would it take to live in a world where people have full stomachs, a place to lay their head at night, healthy water to drink, and the peace and contentment brought by a safe environment? A world where true justice is present. Where people from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds have equal opportunity to live a fulfilling life. I believe this is what scaling love looks like.
A thought on Generosity:
"We have one brief opportunity - a lifetime on earth - to use our resources to make a difference.”
Generosity is the practice that allows us to transcend the materialistic world focused on ourselves and frees us to listen and act on the needs of others. This continual practice and way of living not only fills us with a sense of purpose, but unlocks opportunities to experience more love in our own lives.
A question for the day:
What is the smallest amount you could give to someone, a cause, or an organization today?
If you know of anyone who might be interested in taking this journey towards more Love, more Justice, and more Generosity in their own life and in the world, please send them this link which will allow them to sign up (or copy and send: https://ljg.beehiiv.com/subscribe).
Thank you for being here.
